Beauty Pageant Part 2
In the olden times we have an incomparable story to have reference with “Beauty Pageant.” It is the story of the beautiful Jewish woman Esther who is chosen as queen by the Persian King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) after he has refused to recognize his previous wife, Vashti. What is interesting on this beauty pageant competition, each woman underwent twelve months of beautification in his harem, after which she would go to the king. For the purpose of not putting color as to the attachment of harem to the Muslim culture, Harem generally refers to the mandatory seclusion of women from the outside world. Originally implying 'women's quarters', literally 'something forbidden or kept safe. This is where Esther was being placed after she was chosen as one of the young and beautiful women of the Persian Empire to be the possible wife of the king.
When the Persian (Iran) king Ahasuerus search for a multitude of beautiful maidens and women from all parts of the kingdom, and among them he proposed to make choice, some women keep from being seen to avoid being taken into the harem of the king, when it was not certain that they would be found worthy of becoming his queen.
As for Esther, for four years Mordecai kept her from being seen in public, he hide her in a chamber, so that the king's agents or messengers could not discover her. But her beauty had long been known to fame, and verbal accounts about her are very hard to put out of people’s mind. The reason that the agents had to confess to the king, that the unusual high quality beauty of a woman in the land escaped from their search. Thereupon Ahasuerus issued a decree ordaining the death penalty for the woman who should hideaway herself before the king messenger or agent. There was nothing left for Mordecai to do but fetch Esther from her hiding-place, and immediately she was seen in public and carried to the palace of the king.
